Stiff Windsock at Valkaria Airport X59

Stiff Windsock at Valkaria Airport X59

I dropped by Valkaria Airport (X59) a few days ago to make some plans for media coverage and gather some photo and video coverage for the upcoming Valkaria Air Fest. This photo speaks volumes. Any guesses as to why almost no one was flying on this day?

Looks like it’s right down that strip of pavement in the background, though. If that’s a runway, I’d be all over that, especially if it was consistent, such as in the case of an onshore wind.

I once landed and took off from Rwy 2 at KSGJ in a fairly huge wind. On takeoff, the airspeed indicator was off the peg as soon as I lined up. Got her airborne with about 200 ft of ground roll. Landing was the same. Crawling in to the runway at something like 3o knots ground speed. Had to taxi a long way to make the first turnoff.

Not a frequent thing, but fun when it happens!

The wind was whipping straight down that strip of pavement. Unfortunately, that’s a closed runway that now makes a really nice taxiway. During my several hours there, only one guy took to the skies. He shot some touch-and-goes in his Piper Tomahawk. The pilot did say he tried to “hover” his plane, but it didn’t work. I guess the wind wasn’t THAT strong.
